Now on view in the window gallery at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell, is a limited edition series of photographs of President Elect Barack Obama created by Ramona du Houx of Solon. Du Houx calls these images “Lightgraphs”, and they will remain on view through February 8th.
Ramona du Houx attended the Democratic Party’s National Convention in Denver as a photographer for the College Democrats of America. There she took the opportunity to photograph the newly nominated democratic candidate for president during his famous speech at the Mile High stadium. While other photographers were using high speeds to ensure no blurs du Houx did the opposite.
“Most of the press crew thought I was nuts, until I explained that I was creating a photo that would look like a painting,” said du Houx.
While the other photographers knew what they were going to get du Houx took the risk of not knowing what image she would achieve to create these works of art. They are unique record of an historic event.The dream quality photographs of Ramona du Houx are created with a painter’s eye and pallet.
Du Houx refers to her art as painting with the camera and calls them Lightgraphs. If you didn’t know the medium she was using you might think the photographs are prints of watercolor or oil paintings. With a technique that she developed in 1980, she captures landscapes, people and events with the eye of an Impressionistic painter. To feel the rhythms of the land and of nature’s creations and translate that relaxing, exciting or inspiring atmosphere through her photographic art is her objective.
For me the liberating way of creating a work of art is meant to be a freedom for the viewer. The challenge is to find the balance that can uplift the onlooker, with various hues that stir emotions,” said du Houx.
Ramona was the artist in residence at the Photographic Arts Center in Lewiston. She has taught photography and lectured on her art around the world. Her art has been exhibited in Japan, New York, London, and Maine.
A year ago du Houx was part of a group exhibit at the Daniel Kany gallery in Portland and in Waterville’s Blue Marble Gallery.
